Mission & History
"I am incredibly excited for the creation of the National Chamber Orchestra, which will be one the finest ensembles in North America."
Julien Benichou, Co-Founder, Artistic Director
and Conductor of the National Chamber Orchestra
Founded in 2022 by Conductor Julien Benichou and Clarinetist YaoGuang Zhai, the National Chamber Orchestra (NCO) brings together the greatest instrumentalists of the Capital area.
The National Chamber Orchestra represents an exceptional convergence of elite artistry, drawing from the most accomplished professional musicians across the Baltimore-Washington region, the nation, and the international stage. This dynamic ensemble features principal players and section leaders from the area's most prestigious orchestras while continuously welcoming distinguished soloists and performers from around the globe. By maintaining this fluid exchange of talent, the orchestra cultivates a rich cultural tapestry where diverse musical traditions, interpretive approaches, and performance philosophies intersect. This cosmopolitan blend of perspectives doesn't simply coexist. It actively shapes the ensemble's artistic vision, fostering an environment where regional excellence meets international innovation. The result is a musical culture that thrives on collaboration across borders and backgrounds, creating performances that reflect both the depth of local artistry and the breadth of global musical expression.
Conductor Julien Benichou and clarinetist YaoGuang Zhai, both accomplished musicians, shared a common vision of creating a chamber orchestra that would showcase the immense talent of the Baltimore-Washington region’s classical music scene. Together, they set out on a mission to assemble a group of the region's most exceptional musicians, including members of major orchestras, accomplished soloists, and rising stars, to form the orchestra. With their combined vision and dedication, they have brought to fruition the National Chamber Orchestra, a brilliant ensemble that seeks to enthrall audiences with the power of chamber music.
We offer an intimate, immersive experience that invites audiences into direct dialogue with performers. The National Chamber Orchestra embraces this intimacy as both an artistic philosophy and a community-building mission. In these personal settings, the ensemble's cultural richness, while shaped by musicians from diverse geographic and artistic backgrounds, becomes a living conversation, where different musical traditions and interpretive approaches interact in real time. This diversity amplifies chamber music's inherently collaborative spirit, transforming each performance into a shared cultural exchange. Through this intentional cultivation of connection, the National Chamber Orchestra creates more than concerts. It fosters genuine community, where the ensemble's global perspectives meet local audiences in moments of authentic human engagement.
